Introduction
Centre for Museology & Conservation, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur (CMC-UOR) came to existence in the month of July, 2006 by the sincere and concrete initiative taken by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister Smt. Vasundhara Raje. Dr. Rajni Kant Pant became the first director of the Centre. At that time the centre used to have very few students with fewer facilities. However in the last decade (2006 – 2016), the centre saw a remarkable growth in terms of students, academic performances, collaboration with external bodies like INTACH, ASI, IGNCA, NMI & University of Leicester, UK etc.
Centre for Museology & Conservation is of first kind in Rajasthan to have a conservation laboratory of its own. The Centre runs a semester based Masters course in “Museology & Conservation”, time duration of which is 2 years. This course provides a wide range of theoretical knowledge, an academic attitude towards museums combined with applied professional competence. It equips the students for career of policy making, curatorial or managerial level within heritage conservation also. It deals with new paradigm in Museology in India as well as at outside India. It also provides various dimension of social transformation through museum studies. During span of last two decades new challenges appeared before the Museum world. Several new types of museums came into being and visitor’s expectations form the museums took a new dimension. Subjects like "New Museology", "Museums Marketing", "Museums and information Technology", "Digital Cataloguing" etc. are being seriously considered to be introduced in the syllabus of Museology teaching with the view to meet the challenges of socio-economic factors that have strong bearings on museum management. In the light of the above a thorough restructuring and updating of the syllabus in Museology, teaching has become imperative.
With reference to Rajasthan, Heritage management and Tourism is important programme to propose skilled heritage managers, tour planner, policy maker etc and also learn to operate as a better tourist agency.
